For
a country whose population of women alone is more than the total population of many
other countries, we fare pretty low where their treatment is concerned. The number
of sexual abuse and domestic violence cases against women clearly throws light on
the fact that women in
India
do not enjoy even basic rights; their health, education and empowerment unfortunately
take a back seat under such a scenario. The least we can do is give half our population
an equal world.
Women's Rights/Empowerment
Taphasthali aim in
2010 will focus on the immense opportunity that exists with supporting Women's empowerment.
It has become apparent that investing i n Women has an incredibly high rate of return.
Women in developing areas are exceptional at saving, providing for their families
and generating income. In 2010, Taphasthali will seek those projects and people
that are helping to secure the future of women, whether it be through the reduction
of trafficking, microfinance, the creation of self-help groups and beyond. We feel
as though there is a tremendous opportunity here, and are looking forward to making
a significant impact in this arena.
